Military Appreciation OPEN HOUSE
****** Heroes at Home & Military Appreciation OPEN HOUSE ******
September 19, 2020 ~ 10am - 3pm
Rocky Mountain Museum of Military History, 2975 General Foster Ave. (Building T-316), Fort Missoula
It rained all day, but we had a GREAT time! Erick and Anton gave a brief welcome speech, Rob said a prayer, and Susannah sang the National Anthem.
The UM Marching Band played patriotic songs (along w/others) in the HMFM lawn and joined us for Jimmy John’s, Pepsi products, and individually wrapped cupcakes & cookies made by Terry Hale (WOW…so amazing!).
The kiddos (and adults) enjoyed Monte, the tank, AL train, and Cabela’s archery range.
Of the 27 service providers that had originally signed up to table, we had 12 show up (blame the rain / list of VSP & VOB below) – we appreciate you all SO MUCH!
Keely’s print of Miss Montana, Jennifer’s owls, the pistol/rifle lights, and a last minute wood flag by Dustoff Woodworking (VOB) were the big money makers in the silent auction – we appreciate all the donations for the SA, and if they weren’t claimed w/a bid, we’ll be keeping them for the next H@H & VSAP tentatively scheduled for the Saturday before UM Grad May 2021 (along w/the VSAP donations).
The proceeds from the auction go to the UVC’s Veteran Relief Fund which pays for emergency gas, etc. for Veterans in need (EIN# 81-6016498). If you’d like to donate, please contact John, American Legion Commander, C 544-2583, email@example.com (Or, mail check to American Legion Post 27, 825 Ronan St., Missoula, MT 59801).
We ended the day with some Missoula Cruisers. Monte had a photo shoot with them. Link to the VSN photo album (the photos are public, so you don’t need a FB acct to view them): https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.3246083398840842&type=3&uploaded=41

The VSN Events CMTE will be meeting Thursday, 9/17 at 11am at the American Legion Post 27, 825 Ronan St., Missoula (an hour before the VSP Meeting) and at RMMMH Friday at 1pm to set up tables for the silent auction, etc. (VSP set up is Saturday morning at 9am).
UPDATE 9/15: The Missoula Cruisers are planning on meeting at Arby's/Loose Caboose Saturday morning (11ish) to do their cruise by EIGHT care facilities, and then they'll end up at RMMMH (1 or 2ish) where they'll cruise and/or park at our event; Terry Hale (VFW Auxiliary) has 100 cupcakes baked, frosted, and packed in individual containers for Saturday – she’ll deliver them to the event that morning; Shannon let Monte’s handlers know that the UM band will be there and is working on site maps, route map for Missoula Cruisers, etc.
9/10 VSN Events CMTE Meeting: Will from the University Marching Band joined us to figure out logistics and discuss what songs will be played (Star Spangled Banner, America the Beautiful, an Armed Force Salute, and MORE!); 30-35 members of the band (about half the group) and ensemble (5 – Alumni tuba & trumpets), etc. will be rolling in around 11:30-45 (after the Opening Ceremony) and will be playing 2 sessions 12-1 and 1-2 in the Historical Museum’s lawn (Erick, "Looks like we are good to go for using the other side of the road for band."); They won’t have the UM bus, so most will have to commute on their own; Rebecca picked up the donation from Sandy (dinosaur book and characters for the silent auction), and Tate said there’s plenty of tables at RMMMH for use; Tate’s working on getting re-enactors, and they’ll be posted to the left of the RMMMH front door; Tom confirmed that Rob will say the prayer (VFW Chaplain); John said he made sure all of the District Legion members had the flyer, and AARP will be paying Jimmy John’s directly; Pepsi confirmed that they will be delivering product 9/19 at 9am; John will bring the pools for ice (Tate also has coolers); There will be no parking in front of RMMMH after unloading – Tate and Linda will be blocking it off prior to the event; Parking will be available at FMRP and side streets of HMFM and RMMMH; The VSN Events CMTE will be meeting at 11am 9/17 (an hour before the VSP Meeting at the Legion) to review silent auction forms and the supporter list; We’ll be working out of offices most of the day on Friday, 9/18 to do last minute shopping, etc., and the VSN Events CMTE will meet at RMMMH at 1pm Friday to set up tables, etc.
9/3 VSN Events CMTE Meeting: Shannon announced that a couple of the "Missoula Cruisers" expressed some interested in driving by the event (will confirm time / anytime after opening ceremony); Erick’s going to ask Rob is he’d like to say the prayer (VFW Chaplain); 30 members of the UM Marching Band (brass ensemble) and others will be performing (possibly 12-1 and 1-2); Monte has been confirmed, John is paying the invoice due before event, and Monte will arrive at RMMMH on 9/19 at 12pm; Joy called before the meeting and will bring a children’s book & dinosaur characters donated by Sandy to our next meeting (9/10 RMMMH at 3pm) for the Silent Auction; Jerry from Pepsi contacted Shannon for #'s (we'll request 500 units, half water / half pop); Tate’s still going to have the Civil War Re-enactment set up on the front lawn of RMMMH (weather permitting); John will bring the podium, mic, bell, etc.; Erick said only 3 refunds have been requested for the run/walk/ruck - VSAP is tentatively scheduled for the Saturday before UM graduation May 2021.
8/31/20 MAS Senior Corps - RSVP, "I am so glad this event is happening! We are still closed and only recruiting for critical services like Meals on Wheels. So sorry we can’t help you out this year. I loved the documentary – it came out great! I hope all goes smoothly this year and I miss seeing you guys!"
8/27/20 VSN Events CMTE Meeting: Event rescheduled for Saturday, 9/19; Erick confirmed price for Jimmy John's pre-packaged lunches ($450 for 100 - includes sandwich & chips); Rebecca suggested adding CDC tagline to flyer; Tate will work on getting porta-potties, wash stations, and trash cans - he said they have plenty of tables for the silent auction; Linda will be manning the door of the museum for number of people & masks - we're calling her the "Museum Gatekeeper" :D; Tom is confirming the Cabela's activities (archery range and possible others); Erick's contacting Rick re large Army NG tent for the UM Band, etc.); John will bring the mic & speakers from AL, he'll get napkins (possibly hard candy), and he'll bring the kiddy pools for the soda & water; CMTE agreed to pay requested $250 donation to museum for site use; There may be a psycho-therapy session added to the Silent Auction (Erick will confirm & get value); Shannon will edit the flyer, contact Susannah (back up in case band can't do Opening Ceremony / National Anthem).
8/24/20 Erick “The Health Department does not require us to submit anything else since we are keeping groups of people to under 50. We are a small event that is limiting the number of individuals who are indoors, we can practice social distancing and because service providers are setting up outdoors reducing the chance of exposure. I think it would be appropriate to pay a fee for to RMMMH for the gracious offer and assisting the VSN with providing an alternative location for the event.”
8/20/20 Erick via Coreen (UM), "We have great news! Several UM School of Music ensembles, including part of the Grizzly Marching Band, Celebration Brass, a tuba/euphonium quintet, and the UM Chamber Chorale, are all possibly interested in performing at your event! Thanks for reaching out. It would be an honor for our School of Music musicians to participate in this wonderful event that you’ve created."
8/20/20 VSN Events CMTE, "Since there are no Griz games, we're thinking of moving it back to Saturday, 9/19. Tate checked w/the Board to make sure Saturday is ok, and a poll has been created on the Facebook event page for feedback on the two dates (As of 8/24/20, there are 14 votes for Saturday and 2 for Sunday): https://www.facebook.com/events/483415689026245/
8/11/20 Erick, "It looks like the restrictions are not going to be lifted by Sept. 20. I have been thinking about how to do the event this year in light of COVID and agree that if we can open the museum (Limit number of individuals), have silent auction and have service providers set up the event would bring out many veterans in our community."
7/16/20 VSN Events CMTE ~ As you can imagine, Parks & Rec is working closely with the Missoula City-County Health Department to develop protocols for gatherings of 250 or more. Erick went over the main points and what would be required of us, and we decided it would be WAY too much. There are less restrictions for gatherings of 50 or less, so if the regulations stay as they are, we’ve come up with an alternative plan. More TBA in mid-August.
6/18/20 VSN Events CMTE Meeting, “Tom confirmed that Cabela’s is still providing their archery range and possibly some other activities. Tom also turned in some gift certificates donated by Enlyten Float Lab Center (Matt – 4 GC for $70/each) and Good Medicine Acupuncture & Massage (Jessi - 9 coupons good for $5.00 off next acupuncture treatment). Tom also announced that Bulls Eye Wear would like to table. Erick reported that Matt Zacharias started a Veteran Owned Business called “Warhorse Built,” and he would like to table and possibly sell t-shirts. The committee decided that VOB’s can sell apparel if they’re donating a % of their profits (like Veteran run, Baskin Robbins). Erick will confirm whether Project Tomorrow is still manning a water table, and Shannon will update the donor / VSP list next week. Tom will start soliciting again, and Tom and Erick are working w/Kris Hancock (FS Law Enf & USMC Veteran) to make a VSAP flag.
6/2/20 MAS Senior Corps – RSVP, “As of today, much of MAS staff is working from home and we are not recruiting for new volunteer jobs. If these restrictions are lifted by Sept 1, 2020, I would love to recruit volunteers for this! I will make a note to reach out to you on Aug 15 or so to tell you where MAS management stands on this issue.”
5/21/20 VSN Leadership reviewed the donor list and discussed donors and VSP that have confirmed for the new date. Monte has been confirmed, and as far as we know, all of the activities are still on: Cabela’s archery range, etc.; however, Erick will confirm that and the water tables (Project Tomorrow, etc.). Jerry’s Transmission would like to donate 2 gift certificates for transmissions instead of 1. Thank you! More people have signed up for VSAP, and the VSAP Training Group has been meeting at the site venue to practice every Saturday at 2pm; however, they took a break for Memorial Day. Package pick up will be at the Vet Center 9/18/20 from 0900 to 1800. Shannon will contact Judy, MAS Sr. Corps to see if she will send out the invites to RSVP volunteers (We suggested 10 for food area and 4 for 50/50 so each seller will have a partner / done 6/2/20). The Missoula Paddleheads (formerly Osprey) said their tabling will depend on when the baseball games get rescheduled. If there’s not a game, they’ll still table and provide the new and old mascots.
4/16/20 VSN Leadership met at RMMMH 4/16. Unfortunately, we can't get a permit for May, so we reviewed available dates provided by FMRP for Aug/Sept. September 20, 2020 is the only date feasible for VSN Leadership. Many donors / service providers have already confirmed that date will work for them. THANK YOU for always being there for our Veterans, service members, and families / caregivers! Sincerely, VSN Leadership Team (Anton, Erick, John, Rebecca, Shannon, and Tate)
4/10/20 Monte Bear regarding last year's Easter egg hunt at the BBQ, "Happy Easter VSN! I’m bummed I couldn’t see everyone this year, so we will just have to double up the fun next year! Stay healthy and Go Griz!"
3/4/20 Erick, “Humana donated $500.00, Simkins Hallin donated $300.00, Cabela’s is letting us use the archery range, still looking for two more bands to play a one hour set.”
There are no other races that day – YAY! VSAP volunteers are able to register on the VSAP website (above).
Judy, MAS Sr. Corps – RSVP is sending an invite out to volunteers separately for the food area (10 for food and 4 for 50/50). The VFW Auxiliary will also be assisting in the food area (And, American Legion Auxiliary, as always).
Welcome to the VSN Events CMTE, Andrew! (UM ROTC, Social Work Department / MSW student, and Vet Center “Outreach Intern”). Andrew will ask ROTC color guard if they'd like to participate, and he also has a connection with a company that teaches beading - they may want to provide an activity.
The donation request letter is signed and available on this page; however, if you need a hard copy, please contact VSN Leadership
The RUCK will start immediately following the Opening Ceremony at 10am with a delayed start for everyone else. There’s been some trail system changes.
The VSAP Training Group has started ~ Erick and crew will meet anyone interested in joining them at the event site every Saturday 2pm until the event (Bella Vista Pavilion, Fort Missoula Regional Park).
Susannah Cragwick, Teacher of English as a 2nd Language / Translator / Interpreter, will be there and available to sing the National Anthem again (if needed). Her dad served in the National Guard and both of her grandfathers were WWII Veterans.
On 12/23/19 Tate, Rocky Mountain Museum of Military History said, “Would be pleased, weather permitting, to schedule Civil War camp and reenactors on our front lawn May 2”
At the 9/20/19 PEC event, Rick from the Montana Army National Guard Recruiting offered to bring the large Army tents & tanks to display at RMMMH
